The puppeteer ’s name is Caroll Spinney . He ’s 84 years young . He go far with a cane and seated in a wheelchair to our audience during Dragon Con 2018 . He held his left branch close to his chest , just asBig Birdalways does . Spinney showed sign of his geezerhood , with a mane of white hair and a bright ashen whiskers . As he spoke , his voice was flaccid and shadowy until he slide into the voices of Big Bird or Oscar the Grouch ( both of whom he voice since 1969 ) , then it was like those characters were in the room with us , fill it with their mien as if by thaumaturgy .

" On the first week I was work , Jim [ Henson ] had made Big Bird inexplicably a country yokel , and I realized that ’s not where he would be , " Spinney recounted . " [ Big Bird ] would see nestling going to a day care heart and soul and desire to go in with them . If he ’s a 34 - year - old homo , that does n’t work . And I made him a tiddler . I wanted to make this a child so he ’d be far more useful to the show . I made him a kid and decided he was 4 and a one-half so he could grow a little turn in the eyes of the children , and he acquire to 6 and that was the end of it . I loved play with that sense of curiosity . "

When he speaks as Big Bird , that ’s the only matter you get a line in his voice and see on his face . ( We ’d supply audio from the session here , but we were require to refrain from doing any audio recording or TV recording . )

Puppeteer Caroll Spinney, Sesame Street co-founder and TV producer Joan Ganz Cooney, and Sesame Street cast members pose under a ‘123 Sesame Street’ sign

Spinney ’s wife , Debra , noted that her married person really enjoy doing display like Dragon Con because there was a forced anonymity to protect the tyke .

" We were n’t allowed to be question , " Spinney explained . " A lot of the great unwashed bewilder to be Muppets in the early day and quit because they did n’t care the hale anonymity . It ’s a lot of play to be a boo . A 17 - year - old kid , a football player would explode into tears meeting me , he ’s far older than someone watching the show would be . The character that came out as a skirt fly into their hearts . "

Spinney also spill about how much more ad - libbing they were allowed to do on " Sesame Street " in the old twenty-four hour period . " Everything today is so much more written , and they do n’t like you going off the book . The scripts are swell , but they do n’t like you going off of them . "

When asked what he thought his favorite or best here and now of " Sesame Street " was , he right away pointed to the decease of Mr. Hooper . " We dish out with that death on ' Sesame Street , ' but in a sweet way . I always thought when we were making it it would be just to have hoi polloi see who Big Bird is and how he ’d endeavor to infer what death was . " For the first time during the interview he slipped into the Big Bird phonation , flawlessly talking about the death of Mr. Hooper , say " Who ’s going to read me my history ? Or fix my hoot seminal fluid milkshakes ? " With those two simple statement , Spinney had complete command of the emotions in the room .

" I ’m more like Big Bird than Oscar , " Spinney total afterward . " And I care him advantageously . " But that does n’t mean he has n’t derived any meaning from playing Oscar . He recounted a story about a woman in her late 50s who come near him at a convening to say him how Oscar the Grouch changed her life .

" She told me that she lived in a family with four very strong women [ as a kid ] . … One Clarence Day she was in the firm by herself , she turned the TV on and saw ' Sesame Street , ' and Oscar was on . Oscar was sayingnoto a adult , and she said she did n’t know she could say no to a grownup , and it empowered her . So she accept control condition of her life sentence at that point . ' I became myself that sidereal day , ' she told me . "

And that was the subject matter Spinney ended on — that it was rewarding to know that his life story ’s work has meant something to masses over the year and made their lives better . And if there ’s one thing Caroll Spinney should be sealed of , it ’s that he ’s made alotof sunny days on " Sesame Street " for a mass of people .
