We ’re talking about the toughened stuff today !
We ’ve cash in one’s chips throughdecluttering clothesanddecluttering Book , but decluttering souvenir and memory can be really hard .
You might experience obligated to to keep thing .
You might have a hard time let something go because of the memory associated with it .
You might be keeping something in compositor’s case your kids might need it someday .
So get ’s dig in . Since we moved a month ago and downsized majorly , I just proceed through all of my keepsakes and was somewhat unpitying . These are the method that helped me .
How to Declutter Keepsakes & Memories
Step 1: Ditch the Guilt
look at with keepsakes and memories items can make you experience a lot of guilt . Sometimes you feel obligated to keep something because of the retentiveness associate to it or because it was important to someone else .
You utterly have to ditch the guilty conscience . Feel free to keep the things that are important to you , not the things that were important to someone else or that someone thought should be crucial to you .
You ’re looking to saveyourkeepsakes and memories , not someone else ’s .
representative # 1 : When my parent move , my mom decided not to keep their wedding record album . It was a super courteous professionally done record album full of great photos . She give it to me in case I wanted to keep it . She honestly did n’t even care what I did with it and did n’t give me any guilt about it , but it felt like one of those things that should be keep . But honestly , it ’s their token and memory , not mine . I was n’t bear yet so I ’m not in the photos and I do n’t remember the event . I do have a few photos of their wedding , so it ’s not like no more exposure of their wedding exist , but I did dump the album . It ’s not limited to me .
Example # 2 : Austin ’s mom break him a huge bathtub of things that she saved from his childhood . When he went through the bath , there were many thing that he did n’t even remember or that just were n’t important to him . We got rid of those things . I ’m certain Austin ’s mom remembers those matter , but he does n’t . We wanted to save thing that are special to him , not to someone else . If she desire to save those things , she would have kept them , right ?
If you have keepsake items that are n’t important to you but might be to a acquaintance or family member , put up it to them . Do n’t let them secernate you , “ oh , you have to make unnecessary that ” . If they want it , they can keep it . If you do n’t require it , do n’t sense like you have to preserve someone else ’s memory .
Sometimes things get save from someone who pass away away to show grandkids later on on .
frankly , when it comes to relatives that I ’m too unseasoned to recall , I appreciate seeing pictures of them or pictures of me with them more than I apprize their stuff .
For relative who passed away when I was old , I have a kept a few items or theirs that were meaningful to me , like my nanna ’s china and jewelry . What I love most , though , are photos of me with her .

Step 2: Use It or Lose It
One of the honest mode to honor someones remembering and enjoy keepsake items is to use them !
I ’m examine to habituate my grandma ’s china more instead of storing it . I display a few important photo and endowment on our shelf .
I have a tub of things that it does n’t make sense to display , like a few old diary or domicile motion-picture show , but I endeavor to use as much as possible , otherwise what am I proceed it for ?
Step 3: Take a Picture
If you have an token that ca n’t be used or you ’re quick to get rid of but want to make certain to think of , take a photo .
I ’ve see of people taking pictorial matter of their tike ’s art or a homemade comforter that was no longer usable .
Getting rid of something does n’t stand for that you get rid of the retentiveness consort with it . However , if there is something you cerebrate you ’d wish to count back on , take a pic . It will take up less blank space and you may enjoy it anytime .
Step 4: Set Space Limits
Austin and I have a space limit for keepsakes and retention items that are n’t being used or expose .
We each have a storage bathing tub that we keep our things in . Over the last yr we were both given more puerility item from our parent . We went through our tubs and got free of what we needed to so that everything we wanted to keep would still suit in our tub .
I had kept all of my journal from middle school through college in my bathing tub and there were a destiny ! I decided to get free of most of them to make way for other things . I kept one from middle school , one from in high spirits school , and one from college in casing I desire to look back and commemorate how immature and insecure I was 🙂
Whatever seems reasonable to you , go under a limit for how much you will keep . This will force you to pare down to only the most important point . Everything else you could get rid of , use , or take a photo of .
Things that have an worked up connexion are always the hardest to get disembarrass of . In my judgement , by only keep what unfeignedly matters to me and finding a way to use it ( if potential ) , I honor the computer storage more than if I were to keep huge amount of money of clobber package up in storage .
