At 277 mi ( 445 km ) long , up to 18 mi ( 28 kilometers ) wide and 1 mile ( 1.6 kilometers ) abstruse , the Grand Canyon is one of the most beautiful and awe - inspiring places in the United States . The Hopi Indians think it is thegateway to the afterlife . Its sheer immensity and mystery attract more than6 million visitors in 2016 .

But what those people probably do n’t know is that the Grand Canyon might once have been the home of an entire cloak-and-dagger civilization . But where are they now ? And why did they give up the canyon ? Hosts Matt Frederick , Ben Bowlin and Noel Brown leap directly in to the folklore , the legends , and of course , the confederacy to find out what really pass off to theGrand Canyon ’s Lost Civilizationin this episode of Stuff They Do n’t Want You To Know .

It all started in 1909 , when purportedSmithsonian Institutionexplorer G.E. Kincaid discoveredstrange cavernsduring an expedition lead by Smithsonian anthropologist S.A. Jordan . The entree to the cavern was virtually inaccessible , but Kincaid was able-bodied to get in to make an unbelievable discovery . The enormous caves , which radiate out from a center cavern like spokes on a rack , were full of artifacts , including statue , atomic number 29 weapons , even garner full of seeds . Its size indicated that 50,000 people could live inside comfortably .

But even more amazingly , the artifacts did n’t tally up to anything in the make love record . Rather than appearing to be of Native American parentage , as one might expect , the objects had distinctEgyptianor Tibetan designs . Could there in reality have been an entire civilisation of Egyptians live there ? If so , how did they get there ?

The tale caused a vast sensation when it broke in theArizona Gazettein 1909 , but was soon run across with skepticism : The Smithsonian has no record of either of the scientist , nor their discoveries , and steadfastly squelch any title thatEgyptian artifactshave been recover in either North or South America . And no one has been able to find these supposedly massive cave since . Was this some elaborate hoax , maybe commit by the Gazette to sell papers ?

That ’s certainly a possibility , but it does n’t fly for many cabal theorists . Some arguethat the Smithsonian Institution has purposely pass over Kincaid and Jordan from their record and actively destroyed artifacts that do n’t agree with the " status quo story " of human chronicle . Others think the caves holda passage to the fourth proportion , where the reptilians ( yep ! ) who have secretly run for the world for chiliad of years emerge into our human race . Still others believe the area is top - mystical and close guarded , likeArea 51 .

So is this series of caverns proof of a long - lose , peradventure Egyptian civilisation that ’s simply being covered up by the Smithsonian , or is it a passageway into this dimension for our reptilian master ? One affair is for indisputable . You ’ll have tolisten in to the podcastto get all the crazy point and decide for yourself what ’s really going on in the Grand Canyon — plus to see if Matt , Ben and Noel think the full floor is just a bunch of hooey .
