At 277 mi ( 445 km ) long , up to 18 mi ( 28 kilometers ) wide and 1 mile ( 1.6 kilometers ) abstruse , the Grand Canyon is one of the most beautiful and awe - inspiring places in the United States . The Hopi Indians think it is thegateway to the afterlife . Its sheer immensity and mystery attract more than6 million visitors in 2016 .
But what those people probably do n’t know is that the Grand Canyon might once have been the home of an entire cloak-and-dagger civilization . But where are they now ? And why did they give up the canyon ? It all started in 1909 , when purportedSmithsonian Institutionexplorer G.E. Kincaid discoveredstrange cavernsduring an expedition lead by Smithsonian anthropologist S.A. Jordan . The entree to the cavern was virtually inaccessible , but Kincaid was able-bodied to get in to make an unbelievable discovery . The enormous caves , which radiate out from a center cavern like spokes on a rack , were full of artifacts , including statue , atomic number 29 weapons , even garner full of seeds . Its size indicated that 50,000 people could live inside comfortably .
But even more amazingly , the artifacts did n’t tally up to anything in the make love record . Some arguethat the Smithsonian Institution has purposely pass over Kincaid and Jordan from their record and actively destroyed artifacts that do n’t agree with the " status quo story " of human chronicle . Others think the caves holda passage to the fourth proportion , where the reptilians ( yep ! ) who have secretly run for the world for chiliad of years emerge into our human race . Still others believe the area is top - mystical and close guarded , likeArea 51 .
